The study analyzed fetal and maternal adverse events following fetal surgery for spina bifida and evaluated the impact of engaging patients in collecting follow-up data. The study found similar rates of severe complications to other larger series, with no maternal deaths but 7% severe maternal complications and 3% perinatal deaths. Patient empowerment improved data collection, and the Maternal and Fetal Adverse Event Terminology was clinically more relevant than the generic Clavien-Dindo classification.
