Patterns of use of symptomatic treatments for Alzheimer's disease dementia

A study on Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia reveals that symptomatic treatment can temporarily alleviate symptoms and enhance the quality of life for patients and caregivers. The analysis, spanning 2018–2019, examined drug usage patterns in newly diagnosed AD dementia patients from US and CPRD databases. Results indicate 63–65% of patients utilized symptomatic treatments, with donepezil being the most common (69% vs. 61%). Median time on the initial therapy was short (<1 year), and a minority proceeded to a second treatment. The findings underscore the imperative for improved adherence to existing AD therapies and the development of additional treatments for this debilitating condition.
