PCC Superior to Frozen Plasma for Cardiac Surgery Bleeding Control

A randomized trial of 538 cardiac surgery patients found that 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) was superior to frozen plasma for controlling coagulopathic bleeding. PCC improved hemostatic effectiveness (77.9% vs. 60.4%), reduced transfusion needs, and lowered serious adverse event rates, including acute kidney injury (10.3% vs. 18.8%). These findings suggest PCC as a safer, more effective alternative for coagulation factor replacement in cardiac surgery.
