This study examines the use of customized and custom tracheostomies in medically complex children with unique ventilatory needs. The researchers conducted a retrospective review of patients who received customized or custom tracheostomy tubes at their institution between January 2011 and July 2021. Out of 235 patients, 93% received customized tracheostomies, and 7% received custom tracheostomies. The most common indications for customization were tracheal or stomal breakdown and ventilation difficulties. The most frequent customization was shaft length. Custom tracheostomies were primarily used for addressing persistent air leaks. Patients treated with customized tracheostomies had a higher overall survival rate than those with custom tracheostomies. Modifications to tracheostomies, such as shaft length and cuff design, can help improve ventilation and address complications in challenging cases.

A 10-year retrospective study of 238 men with intermediate-risk prostate cancer found that lower pretreatment tumor ADC on multiparametric MRI was associated with worse long-term outcomes. Patients with ADC ≤0.668 × 10⁻³ mm²/s had nearly four times higher risk of distant metastasis, suggesting ADC may provide additional prognostic information beyond standard clinical risk classification.

Average annual prevalence was 3.32 per 100,000 children, highest among infants and with a secondary rise during adolescence. Reported cases increased annually (IRR 1.022), while declining markedly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
