Periodontitis Linked to Chronic Kidney Disease and Other Systemic Diseases

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the supporting tissues of teeth, impacts 1 billion people globally and is linked to systemic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Immune mediators from periodontitis enter the bloodstream, triggering systemic inflammation similar to CKD. This connection, independent of shared risk factors, suggests periodontitis as a non-traditional risk factor for NCDs. Large-scale studies are needed to confirm causality and develop integrated care strategies.
