Peripheral cord insertions are associated only with adverse pregnancy outcome when accompanied by clinically significant placental pathology

The study aimed to determine the association between peripheral cord insertion and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Sonographic measurement of the cord insertion and placental pathology was conducted in 309 participants. Peripheral cord insertions were associated with diagnostic placental pathology, specifically maternal vascular malperfusion disease, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, adverse outcomes were rare when there was an isolated peripheral cord insertion and no placental pathology. The study recommends that additional sonographic and biochemical features of maternal vascular malperfusion should be investigated when a peripheral cord is observed
