Physical Activity and Mental Health in Children and Adolescents With Neurodevelopmental Disorders

A systematic review of 76 studies, encompassing 3007 participants, indicates that physical activity interventions significantly benefit the overall mental health of children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders. The meta-analysis reveals positive associations with cognitive function, psychological well-being, and reductions in internalizing and externalizing problems. Notably, various moderators, such as session duration and frequency, total sessions, and total duration, influence the effectiveness of interventions across different mental health domains. The findings suggest grouping individuals with diverse neurodevelopmental disorders for physical activity interventions while emphasizing tailored approaches for specific mental health aspects.
