Physical Activity Mitigates Cognitive Decline from Long Sleep

This longitudinal study examined the individual and joint effects of sleep duration and physical activity on cognitive function in 14,694 participants aged ≥ 50 years, with an average follow-up of 4.5 years. The results revealed that long sleep duration was independently associated with cognitive decline, while short sleep duration and physical activity alone had no significant impact. However, increased physical activity appeared to slow cognitive decline in individuals with long sleep duration. These findings suggest that interventions to improve sleep and physical activity could be more effective in slowing cognitive decline.
