
Sonographic sonolucencies are common in placental tissue during pregnancy's second and third trimesters. These anechoic areas, known as lakes and lacunae, result from low echogenicity in villous-free regions filled with maternal blood. Lakes appear as maternal blood flows into the placental intervillous space, while lacunae develop progressively in accreta placentation during the second trimester. Larger lakes occur in areas with less villous tissue, and they can transform into cystic lesions linked to poor fetal growth. Lacunae, associated with uterine scarring, signify a high risk of placenta accreta syndrome. Understanding these phenomena is crucial for identifying pregnancy complications.
