Plasma Neurofilament Light Chain Predicts Alzheimer's Disease in Patients with Subjective Cognitive Decline and Mild Cognitive Impairment

A recent longitudinal cohort study involving 140 patients (45 with subjective cognitive decline, 73 with mild cognitive impairment, and 22 with Alzheimer's disease dementia) has demonstrated the potential of plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) as a reliable predictor for Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline progression. The study found that plasma NfL accurately identified patients with AD biomarker profiles at baseline and specific cut-off values were established for different stages of cognitive impairment. Furthermore, changes in plasma NfL levels over time were associated with the progression of cognitive decline, offering a non-invasive means of early detection.
