Innovative dialysis technologies are being developed to address the limitations of conventional hemodialysis, such as high costs, limited removal of waste products, poor patient quality of life, and environmental impact. Portable, wearable, and implantable artificial kidney systems aim to improve patient care. Dialysate recycling systems using sorbents show promise in continuously regenerating a small volume of dialysate. Novel dialysis membranes made of polymeric or inorganic materials are being developed to enhance the removal of a wide range of waste products with minimal fouling. Combining these membranes with bioartificial kidneys, which incorporate artificial membranes and kidney cells, could provide more comprehensive therapy. Overcoming challenges like cell sourcing, large-scale production, and quality control requires collaboration among stakeholders for technological advancements.
