A recent study investigating muscle protein synthesis (MPS) in different settings has found that patients who stay overnight in the hospital as inpatients experience a reduction in MPS compared to those visiting as outpatients. The study showed that outpatients had a 12% higher postabsorptive MPS than inpatients. Interestingly, even minimal activity, such as walking (∼900 steps), significantly increased MPS. These findings emphasize the importance of considering physical activity levels when interpreting MPS results.
