Pre-pregnancy body mass index and adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in twins: A population retrospective cohort study

A study conducted in British Columbia, Canada, aimed to examine the relationship between pre-pregnancy BMI and severe maternal morbidity (SMM), perinatal death, and severe neonatal morbidity in twin pregnancies. The study included twin births from 2000 to 2017, totaling 7770 women. Rates of SMM were compared among underweight, normal BMI, overweight, and obese women. The results showed that obesity was not significantly associated with adverse outcomes in twin pregnancies. However, underweight women had a higher risk of adverse outcomes, including severe respiratory distress syndrome and neonatal death. These findings suggest that underweight women with twin pregnancies may require specific care.
