Pre-pregnancy body mass index and gut microbiota of mothers and children 5 years postpartum

A study investigated the long-term effects of maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) on gut microbiota in mothers and their children. The study followed 180 mother-child pairs from pregnancy until 5 years postpartum. Stool samples were collected from both mothers and children at the 5-year mark, and gut microbiota composition was analyzed. The study found that overall microbiota composition was more similar between mother-child pairs than between mothers or between children. Higher pre-pregnancy BMI and postpartum BMI in mothers were associated with lower microbiota diversity. Maternal pre-pregnancy BMI was weakly associated with lower microbiota diversity in children, while child's BMI at 5 years was associated with higher microbiota diversity.
