Preclinical Models of Laryngeal Papillomavirus Infection: A Scoping Review

This study aimed to summarize the existing research on preclinical models of laryngeal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which can lead to respiratory papillomatosis and laryngeal cancer. The researchers searched databases for relevant studies published up to October 2022. Out of 440 citations and 138 full-text studies, 77 studies met the criteria and were included. The models described in these studies primarily used low-risk HPV or focused on respiratory papillomatosis and laryngeal cancer. Short-term models using cell cultures, xenografts, and animal infections showed promising results, but most models lost viral DNA over time. Level of Evidence N/A Laryngoscope, 2023
