The study aimed to compare the perceived risks of active surveillance and hemithyroidectomy for managing Bethesda III thyroid nodules. A survey was conducted involving 129 patients, 46 clinicians, and 66 healthy individuals. The results showed that respondents were willing to accept a 10%–15% risk of thyroid cancer and a 15% risk of needing more extensive surgery in the future with active surveillance. For hemithyroidectomy, respondents were willing to accept a 22.5%–30% risk of hypothyroidism. Patients and controls were more willing to accept a higher risk of permanent voice changes (10% vs 3%) compared to clinicians. The study suggests that the actual risks associated with both approaches are comparable or lower than the risks people are willing to accept. However, clinicians are more cautious about the risk of permanent voice changes.
