A recent study conducted between April 2020 and October 2022 examined 54 episodes of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) in 47 pregnant women. Despite most DKA cases being mild and occurring in the third trimester, alarming findings showed a high fetal mortality rate (28%). Pregestational diabetes (60%) predominated, with 94% requiring insulin. Surprisingly, 29% of women without prior Type 1 diabetes history had autoimmune diabetes. DKA precipitants included infections (26%) and insulin disruption (26%). Hypokalemia, linked to fetal loss, was present in 65% of cases, emphasizing the need for improved management strategies in pregnant women with DKA.
