
The popular anti-diabetes drug, metformin hydrochloride, might soon become the first oral diabetic medication approved for use during pregnancy and the periconceptional stage in India. The country's drug regulator has requested gynaecologists and neonatologists to review metformin hydrochloride for consideration. Currently, doctors in India prescribe insulin for pregnant women. The Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation's Subject Expert Committee discussed the matter after a proposal by drugmaker USV. Although metformin shows promise, experts emphasize the need for Indian-specific data due to reports of low birth weight in specific patient subsets.
