Prenatal vitamin D supplementation to prevent childhood asthma

A 15-year study, the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial (VDAART), reveals significant findings regarding prenatal vitamin D supplementation. Initial analyses didn't yield statistical significance, but post hoc analyses show a significant reduction in asthma among 3 and 6-year-olds when comparing higher vitamin D doses (4400 IU/d) to standard prenatal multivitamins (400 IU/d). Results also indicate lowered serum IgE levels and improved lung function in children whose mothers received vitamin D supplements. The study suggests optimal vitamin D dosing for pregnant women to prevent childhood asthma, emphasizing the need for further research in this area.
