Preoperative Factors Impact Lumbar Surgery Expectations

A retrospective cohort study of 5389 patients undergoing elective lumbar spine surgery analyzed preoperative factors influencing expectation fulfillment. Unmet expectations ranged from 6.7% to 25.7%, with improved physical capacity being most commonly fulfilled. Longer symptom duration (OR: 0.74), prior lumbar surgery (OR: 0.63), and reoperations (OR: 0.36) were linked to higher unmet expectations, particularly for leg pain relief.
