This retrospective study analyzed US claims data from 2015 to 2019 to compare prescription opioid dispensing trends among patients with schizophrenia (SZ) or bipolar disorder (BD) and controls. Patients with SZ or BD had higher prevalence of comorbidities, including pain. Chronic opioid dispensing proportions decreased over the study period for SZ and BD patients, both commercially and Medicaid-insured, as did nonchronic opioid dispensing. However, proportions remained higher for BD patients compared to controls. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring opioid use in SZ and BD populations to mitigate risks of complications, including opioid-induced respiratory depression.
