OPHTHALMOLOGY

The study is a retrospective cohort investigation of the prevalence of pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) maculopathy in patients with PPS exposure, and the relationship between cumulative PPS exposure and the presence of PPS-maculopathy. The study was conducted by reviewing electronic medical records and diagnostic imaging, as well as contacting patients to determine cumulative exposure. Out of 335 eligible patients, 84 had sufficient diagnostic imaging. Results showed that patients with any signs of PPS-maculopathy had a higher mean cumulative PPS exposure compared to those without. The odds of PPS-maculopathy were significantly elevated in patients with cumulative PPS exposures of 1500-2000 g and greater than 2000 g. The study highlights the incidence of PPS-maculopathy and its relationship to PPS exposure, with patients with higher cumulative exposures having a higher risk of PPS-maculopathy.
