Prevalence and Risk Factors of Major Depression in Patients with Diabetic Retinopathy

A recent study uncovered links between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and depression. Participants with moderate to severe DR had a 2.36 times higher risk of depression than those with milder or no retinopathy. Objective measures like visual acuity and HbA1c aren't tied to depression, but self-reported vision measures show a strong association: worrying about eyesight (OR: 4.59), limited activities due to vision (OR: 8.52), and frequent activity limits (OR: 6.99). This study sheds light on the importance of holistic care for diabetic patients.
