
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of invasive cervical cancer (ICC), with over 500,000 new cases annually. Persistent HPV infections evade immune clearance and proliferate in the host, contributing to the development of ICC. Recent evidence highlights the potential of oral probiotics in modulating the body's immunity, metabolic pathways, and microbial balance, particularly through the gut-vagina axis, which links gut microbiota (GM) and vaginal microbiota (VM). This review examines how probiotics, especially Lactobacillus, could play a role in clearing HPV by influencing both GM and VM. The effectiveness of Lactobacillus in preventing vaginal diseases suggests its promise in HPV clearance, offering potential new avenues for reducing HPV-related diseases, including cervical cancer.
