Prolonged Growth and ADHD in Institutionalized Children

Delayed physical growth and atypical neurophysiology are linked to ADHD in institutionalized children, regardless of foster care placement. In a study of 177 children, 27% met ADHD criteria. Slowed growth trajectories, particularly in height and head circumference, were associated with ADHD outcomes. Placement in foster care showed some benefits, but early, atypical neurophysiological maturation was a stronger predictor of ADHD symptoms. Foster care did not prevent these outcomes.
