This study aimed to assess whether using prophylactic antibiotics (PA) alongside myringoplasty (ear drum repair) for clean, uninfected ears reduces postoperative infections within 6 weeks and influences healing rates of the eardrum 6-24 months post-surgery. The retrospective cohort study analyzed data from The Swedish Quality Register for Ear Surgery (SwedEar) from 2013-2019. Out of 1665 patients, 86.2% had healed eardrums at follow-up, with no significant difference between those who received PA (87.2%) and those who didn't (86.1%). Postoperative infections within 6 weeks occurred in 10.2% with PA and 7.7% without, but the difference wasn't statistically significant. Postoperative infections negatively impacted healing rates. In conclusion, PA doesn't notably improve eardrum healing or reduce infection risk after surgery.
