Prostate Cancer Patients Benefit from Proton Therapy in Landmark Study

This study evaluates the outcomes of 605 men with high-risk prostate cancer who were treated with proton therapy between 2009 and 2019. The study found that early outcomes were encouraging for both safety and efficacy, with 3- and 5-year freedom from progression rates of 90.7% and 81.4%, respectively, and 5-year metastasis-free survival and overall survival rates of 92.8% and 95.9%, respectively. Gleason score, PSA level, and clinical stage were identified as predictors of freedom from progression. The study concludes that further evaluation is needed to determine if proton therapy has an advantage over other radiation techniques for this population.
