
The human prostate contains a population of epithelial cells akin to lung club cells, yet their precise localization and relation to prostate cancer remain unclear. The Journal of Pathology's recent article used RNA in situ hybridization to reveal that club cell markers are expressed in luminal cells near inflammation in the human prostate's peripheral zone, a common site for prostate cancer. These club-like cells are frequently found in proliferative inflammatory atrophy (PIA) lesions and exhibit characteristics of an intermediate epithelial cell type. Further research is crucial to unravel the functional significance of these cells in prostate inflammation, regeneration, and pathology.
