The study investigated the effects of pyridoxamine (PM) on glycation and various metabolic and vascular measurements in abdominally obese individuals. The participants were randomly assigned to an 8-week intervention with either a placebo or two different .doses of PM. The study found that the high PM dose reduced plasma methylglyoxal and protein-bound Nδ-(5-hydro-5-methyl-4-imidazolon-2-yl)-ornithine (MG-H1) as compared to the placebo group. Additionally, both the low and high-dose groups of PM showed a reduction of the endothelial dysfunction marker soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), and the high-dose group showed a reduction of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1). However, the PM did not affect insulin sensitivity, vascular function, or other functional outcome measurements. The reduction in adhesion markers is promising as these are important in the pathogenesis of endothelial damage and atherosclerosis.
