The study aimed to determine if the combination of ruxolitinib and simvastatin could reduce the incidence of respiratory insufficiency in COVID-19 patients with mild disease. The study found that the treatment did not impact the outcome of COVID-19. However, cytokine profiling identified patients at risk of severe disease and predicted clinical deterioration with 85% accuracy. The study suggests that managing the inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 could prevent respiratory insufficiency and that cytokine profiles could be useful in identifying cases at risk of severe disease.
