Rapid point-of-care detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection in exhaled breath using ion mobility spectrometry

A bi-Centre clinical pilot study explored the use of multi-capillary column ion mobility spectrometry (MCC-IMS) for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infection through breath gas analysis. Between September 2020 and June 2021, among 380 patients with respiratory symptoms, 54 out of 110 identified peaks in breath gas showed significant differences between PCR-negative and PCR-positive cases. Sensitivity ranged from 74% to 83%, and specificity from 52% to 86%. Although establishing a robust classification system remains challenging, this innovative approach could become a valuable diagnostic tool for COVID-19 with potential modifications.
