Rare Talaromyces marneffei Infections in HIV Patients Analyzed

A study investigated tracheobronchial Talaromyces marneffei infections in seven HIV-infected men, aged 39–50, at the Fourth People’s Hospital of Nanning from January 2015 to June 2022. Common symptoms included cough, sputum, fever, and weight loss. All patients exhibited reduced CD4+ T-cell counts (<50 cells/µL) and showed specific chest CT findings, including bronchial stenosis and occlusion. Treatment involved antifungal therapy, leading to remission in six patients; one patient died. Findings underscore the importance of bronchoscopy for diagnosis and combined antiviral-antifungal treatment for improved outcomes.
