Real-time optical detection of endodontic infection using bacterial autofluorescence

This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using real-time optical detection of bacterial autofluorescence in root canal exudates to evaluate endodontic infection status. The study collected exudates during root canal treatment and used quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology to measure red fluorescence (RF) intensity and area. They found that RF intensity and area increased with infection severity and correlated strongly with organoleptic scores. The diagnostic accuracy for detecting infection using RF intensity was good to excellent. The study also revealed differences in microbial diversity between RF and non-RF samples, with Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria being more predominant in RF samples. This optical technology has the potential to improve root canal treatment outcomes by providing real-time infection status without conventional incubation.
