Researchers described the circumstances of SARS-CoV-2 household transmission and identified factors associated with a lower risk of transmission. They analyzed cases where transmission occurred within households and compared the exposures of infected individuals (index cases) and their non-infected household members (related controls) to the source case. The findings showed that the source case was often a child or partner of the index case. Factors such as COVID-19 vaccination (3+ doses), isolation from the source case, and ventilation of indoor areas were associated with a reduced risk of infection within the household. These findings highlight the importance of mitigation strategies in preventing secondary transmission within households during the COVID-19 pandemic.
