A cross-sectional study of 77 women with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) myalgia examined whether the number of sites eliciting referred pain during palpation reflects disease severity. Researchers found that more referred pain sites were significantly associated with higher pain intensity, greater pain frequency, and a wider distribution of painful body sites. Each additional painful body site and day of pain increased the likelihood of referred pain. These findings suggest that assessing referred pain sites may help clinicians better evaluate pain severity and guide comprehensive TMD management.
