Researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that can identify warning symptoms of diabetes in chest X-ray images, even in individuals without apparent risk factors. The model, based on over 2.7 lakh X-rays, accurately predicted the risk of diabetes in another set of 15,000 X-rays. Although blood sugar tests are still necessary for confirmation, the AI's early detection can lead to timely interventions and better management, reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications. The method could be extended to opportunistic screening in accident or respiratory illness cases. The AI model is particularly valuable for Indians due to their unique body composition and early onset of diabetes.
