Researchers find how specific gut bacteria increase risk of severe malaria

Malaria, a deadly infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes, claimed 619,000 lives worldwide in 2021, with 76% of victims under five years old, according to the World Malaria Report by the WHO. The study has identified specific gut bacteria, "Bacteroides," linked to increased severe malaria risk in humans. These findings could lead to innovative strategies to prevent malaria-related fatalities. This study addresses the plateau in progress seen over the last five years.
