Researchers Identify Key Endothelial Cells for Improved Synthetic Vascular Grafts

This study addresses the challenge of improving small-diameter synthetic vascular grafts' patency rates by identifying endothelial cells (ECs) resistant to detachment under fluid shear stress (SS). Through RNA-sequencing and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), researchers discovered that ECs with low fibronectin leucine-rich transmembrane protein 2 (FLRT2) expression adhere better. These findings suggest that EC detachment is not random and can be predicted based on FLRT2 levels. Selectively seeding grafts with these adherent ECs could enhance endothelialization and potentially mitigate thrombosis and intimal hyperplasia.
