The study examined the otolaryngology residency selection process using a mixed-methods approach of a scoping review and a cross-sectional survey. Three themes regarding effectiveness, efficiency, and equity surfaced from the analysis. The survey results showed that the most important goals for the selection process were to fit the program culture, make good colleagues, and contribute to program diversity, while the biggest pain points were a large volume of applications, lack of reliable information about personal characteristics, and lack of reliable information about a genuine interest in the program. The study proposes a framework based on person-environment fit theory to guide research and policy discussions to achieve more effective, efficient, and equitable outcomes in otolaryngology residency selection.
