The study aimed to identify predictors of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and estimate the frequency of normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) in newly diagnosed patients in a defined population. Results showed that 99 subjects were diagnosed with OAG, of which six were diagnosed with NTG. Risk factors for OAG included increased intraocular pressure (IOP), older age, male sex, positive family history, pseudoexfoliation (PEX), and optic disc haemorrhages. The study found that every increase in IOP by five mmHg increased the risk of OAG four-fold. The effect of PEX on OAG was primarily due to increased pressure. The results were consistent even when the study population was expanded to include 63 subjects first examined at a different healthcare facility. The study concluded that increased IOP is strongly associated with incident OAG in clinical practice, while NTG is a rare finding in newly diagnosed patients in the study population.
