Risk Factors for Progression to Type 2 Diabetes in a Pediatric Prediabetes Clinic Population

A recent study spanning 7 years analyzed pediatric prediabetes cases, revealing that 6.5% of patients progressed to type 2 diabetes (T2D). The research identified key indicators for T2D progression: higher initial body mass index, HbA1C, 2-hour glucose, and C-peptide levels. Notably, fasting glucose showed no significant difference. A multivariable model highlighted male sex, initial HbA1C, and 2-hour glucose as predictive factors. Patients who transitioned to T2D exhibited a substantial increase in BMI, while those on consistent metformin therapy took longer to progress (43 vs 26 months). These findings emphasize the importance of early intervention and risk stratification based on specific biomarkers.
