Risk of low bone mineral density in patients with haemophilia

This study examines the risk of low bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with haemophilia (PWH). A meta-analysis of 19 studies from 2004 to 2022 found that PWH have a four-fold higher risk of low BMD compared to controls. PWH have significantly lower lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip BMD. The risk did not increase significantly in developed countries. The meta-analysis showed very low heterogeneity, suggesting publication bias. The findings suggest that concerns should extend beyond bleeding and osteoarthritis to include BMD starting at a young age for PWH.
