A study in Alberta examined the link between pre‐gestational maternal diabetes (MD) and congenital heart disease (CHD) in offspring. Of 594,755 births, 48 of 7,449 births with MD had major CHD (mCHD), indicating a 2.8-fold risk increase. Maternal age and multiple gestations also raised mCHD risk. However, pre-pregnancy weight >91kg wasn't a significant factor. Glycemic control during the first trimester showed A1c levels >8.0% increased mCHD risk by 8.5 times compared to no diabetes and 4.4 times compared to MD with normal A1c. The study suggests refining high-risk pregnancy screening criteria due to these findings.
