Risk of Stroke, Myocardial Infarction, Deep Vein Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism, and Death After Retinal Vein Occlusion

A study comparing 45,304 retinal vein occlusion (RVO) patients with an equal number of cataract patients as controls delved into post-RVO health risks. The RVO group showed an elevated risk of death at 1 (RR: 1.30, p<0.01), 5 (RR: 1.22, p<0.01), and 10 years (RR:1.08, p<0.01). Stroke risk also increased significantly at 1 (RR:1.61, p<0.01), 5 (RR:1.31, p<0.01), and 10 years (RR: 1.18, p<0.01). While MI risk was elevated at 1 and 5 years, it normalized after a decade. The study highlights the importance of long-term evaluation after RVO.
