Robotic Surgery Outperforms Laparoscopic in Rectal Cancer Resection

Robotic surgery (RS) significantly outperforms laparoscopic surgery (LS) in elective rectal resection for rectal cancer. In a meta-analysis of 11 RCTs with 3107 patients, RS had a lower conversion rate (OR: 0.42) and reoperation rate (OR: 0.45), harvested more lymph nodes (MD: 0.67), and resulted in fewer positive circumferential margins (CRM: OR: 0.59). RS also reduced recovery times for urination, defecation, and flatus, though increased operating time (MD: 23.46). Postoperative complications did not differ significantly.
