This study investigates the role of bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP7) in airway disease associated with COPD. BMP7 expression was elevated in bronchial epithelial cells of COPD patients and correlated with airway wall thickness, inflammation, and lung function decline. BMP7 inhibited epithelial cell proliferation, promoted squamous metaplasia, and triggered apoptosis through the MKK7/JNK2 and caspase-3 pathways. These findings suggest BMP7 as a key factor in COPD airway remodeling and dysfunction.
