A new study comparing nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) with warfarin in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with morbid obesity (BMI > 40 kg/m2 and/or weight > 120 kg) revealed favorable outcomes for NOACs. Pooled data indicated a significantly lower risk of major bleeding with NOACs (OR = 0.54), while the effect on minor bleeding became highly significant after sensitivity analysis (OR = 0.55). Stroke incidence was significantly lower in the NOAC group (OR = 0.69). The study suggests NOACs may be more effective and safer for morbidly obese AF patients, though certain outcomes warrant further research.
