Safety of Oral Acetaminophen in Adults Aged ≥65 Years

This population-based cohort study examined the safety of oral acetaminophen at therapeutic doses in adults aged ≥65 years, using data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink‐Gold. It included 180,483 acetaminophen-exposed and 402,478 unexposed participants. The study found acetaminophen exposure was associated with increased risks of serious complications, including gastrointestinal bleeding, heart failure, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. The results suggest that, despite acetaminophen's perceived safety, it may not be suitable as a first-line analgesic for long-term conditions in older adults due to these risks.
