This study examined 116 older adults to explore the link between oral hypofunction and salivary biomarkers. Oral hypofunction, characterized by various oral health declines, affects 63.8% of participants. Calprotectin levels correlated significantly with oral moisture and masticatory function, while 8-OHdG levels related to tongue and lip movement and oral hygiene. Advanced glycation end-products (AGE) were linked only to tongue and lip movement. Calprotectin levels remained significantly associated with oral hypofunction even after adjusting for age, sex, and periodontal status. These findings suggest potential biomarkers for assessing and managing oral health in older populations.
