Salivary biomarkers: novel noninvasive tools to diagnose chronic inflammation

This review discusses the potential of using salivary biomarkers for early assessment and diagnosis of chronic disorders like type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and cancer, which are often linked to chronic low-grade inflammation. Saliva contains substances, including acute phase proteins, cytokines, and enzymes, which can indicate inflammatory conditions. Saliva offers non-invasive and cost-effective collection, and its concentration often correlates with serum levels. The review explores standard and cutting-edge techniques for discovering salivary biomarkers and highlights novel methods like biosensors to improve care for patients with chronic conditions. This approach may eventually replace conventional diagnostic pathways with detectable soluble mediators in saliva.
